As the owner of a motorcycle, you want to make sure that you have the right coverage to protect both you and your bike in the event of an accident, but you also need to protect your passengers with rider motorcycle insurance coverage as well. Rider motorcycle insurance isn’t something that many owners think about when they think of insuring their bikes, but it is very important!
You need insurance coverage that covers your passengers in the event of an accident. This type of coverage is called different things from one insurance company to another, but it is typically known as passenger insurance coverage. If you tell your agent that you want passenger insurance coverage, they should know what you are talking about – if they don’t, you might want to shop for a different insurance company!
Passenger coverage covers liability for injuries to your passengers in case you are in an accident. This coverage usually pays the passenger if you are at fault in the accident, or if you are struck by an uninsured or under insured motorist. It can cover your passenger’s medical expenses and possibly even their lost wages while they are disabled.
Most of us think that our friends would never sue us – but you shouldn’t count on that. If your friend is riding on your motorcycle, and you are in an accident where you are at fault, your friend may very well sue you if you do not have coverage that provides for their medical expenses.
If you do have coverage, and it is not sufficient, they may decide to sue your insurance company for more money. This will cause your rates to go up, or your insurance company to drop your coverage altogether. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a friend won’t sue you or your insurance company! Make sure that you have adequate rider motorcycle insurance!
