What Causes High Motorcycle Insurance Rates?

Motorcycle insurance is much the same as automobile insurance, but there are differences that you need to know about. There are also various ways to lower your motorcycle insurance rate that you may not be aware of. Before you start shopping for insurance for your Hog, take the time to know what you should be looking for in a motorcycle insurance company.

Insurance premiums are set based on certain factors. Your age, your driving record, the type of motorcycle you own, and where the bike is garaged are all considered. However, just like automobile insurance, your marital status, home ownership, and other factors can also play an important role in determining your rate. Keeping a clean driving record is the first step to lower rates.

However, there are some things that are not necessarily under your control when it comes to motorcycle insurance. If you are under 25, you can expect to pay higher rates in almost every state until you reach the age of 25. If you are single or divorced, your rate may be higher as well. If you do not own your home, your rate will probably be higher. If the motorcycle will be garaged in an area where there are a higher number of thefts or accidents, as compared to other locations in your State or in the country, the rate will be higher. All of these things matter to insurance companies.

You can lower the rate if you are over the age of 25, married, own your home, and live in an area where there are less accidents and thefts. You can further lower your rate by taking a motorcycle driver's training course in your area. Completion of such a course can lower your rates by as much as 15%. Discounts are also given to members of motorcycle organizations - although being a member of the Hell's Angels probably won't lower your rates.

Try to use the same insurance company that insures your car, home, boat, or other insurable property for your motorcycle insurance. You can often get a better rate this way. Also, if you live in the Northern states, where snow and ice occur in the winter months, you should ask about a ‘lay up' policy. This policy will suspend all coverage, except comprehensive coverage, during those winter months when you won't be riding the bike.
